| NOTES FOR THE PERFORMER |
|
In the third part from the Seasonal Songs we solemnly celebrate summer.
This is done by focussing on the darker tone colours in the woodwind and
brass section, with a prominent role to be played by the English horn,
optionally replaced by alto saxophone, and the solo flugelhorn. This
pointillistic depiction requires careful sound balancing. The first chorus
is full of chromatic harmony and a well-hidden quote from the first Bach
cello-suite. The second chorus, from m. 40 onwards, leads to a climax, with
the melody processed throught the medieval hoquet technique: it is frequently
redistributed over the various orchestral sections. Thinking in longer lines
will help to achieve a radiant performance of this sunny arrangement.
